Unlike food and drugs, cosmetics have no monitoring, no required testing and inadequate labelling. The food and drug administration (F.D.A) does not regulate this industry, leaving the cosmetic companies free to use unlimited amounts of chemicals in beauty products.
In recent years an expanding body of evidence has linked the pollutants in man made chemicals to cancer, declining sperm counts, birth defects and a host of other health problems on the rise in the human population.
Of the 10,500 chemical ingredients used in the cosmetics industry, just 11% have been assessed for safety. One of the most widely used is a man made chemical called Phthalates, its function is that of an industrial chemical used in solvents and as plasticizers in many cosmetics, in fact most of the big names use Phthalates in their products. The health concerns of this chemical are damage to the kidneys, lungs, and in particular the developing male reproductive system.
These chemicals are used by, amongst others, Bobbi Brown, LOreal, Estee Lauder and Clarins. Many government agencies worldwide have called for a ban on the use of Phthalates and there are some more responsible cosmetics companies looking into alternatives for its use. However whilst we still have the less responsible or less educated still pushing poisonous products to the public, the cosmetics industry will continue using toxins in its products.
