It can be hard trying to live on a pension, especially for the frequent visitors to the Viper Room, a brothel in the Australian city of Brisbane. That is why owner Neil Campbell hopes to encourage his more elderly clientele by offering them a 5% discount.
"All other businesses offer pensioners a discount, so we thought if we also offered pensioners a discount they might come more often," Mr Campbell told Reuters news agency.
"About 20% of weekend clients to the Viper Room are men of pensionable age, Mr Campbell told the Australian newspaper The Sunday Mail. One client is as old as 80."
Mr Campbell added that all his staff are trained in first aid and resuscitation techniques so that If there was an incident where someone had a heart attack, they would be well looked after until help arrived.
Initially, the pensioners' discount will only apply on Sundays, although Mr Campbell said the offer might be extended if it proves successful.
"We get a lot of seniors in, especially on the weekends. Sunday is a big day for pensioners to go out and relax," he said. "They usually come in and see us before their day out at the bowls club or golf day."
Prostitution is legal in some parts of Australia, provided brothels have a licence and meet certain standards.
Just a few months ago, a Melbourne-based brothel called Daily Planet became the first to be listed on the stock exchange.
