GCSE & ‘A’ Level Hybrid

To most people the word ´Hybrid´ would bring to mind a vehicle which runs on a combination of gas and electricity; in the world of higher education, ´Hybrid´ would, most likely, refer to a course which combines both traditional classroom instruction and online learning activities.

However, here on the coast, the word ´Hybrid´ conjures up a completely different and unique programme of learning. The Mayfair Academy Hybrid Instruction Course is aimed at students who are looking for a change from the traditional classroom based GCSE and A Level courses.

Whilst many students embarking on their choice of GCSE and A Level subjects may succeed in achieving good grades, others may have a difficult time grasping the important concepts or lack the internal motivation to work up to their potential. Being pushed too hard or being pushed in the wrong direction can result in resistance and apathy which could cripple the future success of these students. If not addressed quickly, this simple lack of initiative can quickly and sometimes permanently alter a studentÂ’s future and these students may find themselves becoming the future Neets (not in education, employment or training).

Apathy is not a condition nor a disease, however, an alternative programme of learning, such as the Hybrid Course, may well immunize these students against this silent assassin and help them form a goal that they can internalize and work towards. Mayfair Academy has implemented several new strategies to aid students who may be in need of motivation giving them the potential to be successful and to achieve the qualifications necessary to enter university.


Without completing a proper education, school leavers will face a hard road when competing for openings in an increasingly competitive job market which, in turn, may lead to loss of self esteem, emotional stability and overall well-being. Young people who are out of work, training and education are significantly less happy with their lives, health and family than those with jobs and they also face a lifetime of poorer health, with one in ten claiming that being out of work drove them to drugs or alcohol.

The emotional effects on young people are profound and long-term and can become irreversible. This paints a very grim picture especially with data from the Office for National Statistics showing that the recession had disproportionately affected young people, with an eight per cent rise in unemployment among 16 and 17-year-olds and nearly a fifth of 16 to 24-year- olds - more than a million young people – out of work, the highest figure since records began.

The Mayfair Academy Hybrid Taster Course on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th June is an opportunity for students to experience the Hybrid programme of learning. This free two day course is aimed at students who want to go to university but are unsure or worried about how they are going to achieve this or for students who may be becoming indifferent and apathetic in the courses that they have already embarked upon.
