Nestling behind the city’s stunning cathedral, Sola is one of Sheffield’s more unique bars. Beneath the huge glass roof, which is supported by barn-style beams, we have the bar and restaurant area. The styling? Well, think funky 70s canteen or, to put it slightly more cruelly, how people in 1960 might have imagined a bar would look in the year 2002. There’s pre-formed plastic chairs, chocolate and orange retro wall art running the length of the wall opposite the bar and an equally long "let’s make friends" leather couch beneath it. The music is chilled, the menu Modern English/Continental and the prices are very good. To top it all off there’s an award-winning cocktail list.

"I went to the launch of Solar last night. The food was v good, the wine was nicely chilled the atmosphere was vibrant and the art was fantastic. The only bad thing was that some of the art was not labelled and I didn't know how much they cost. The art that was priced was very cheap, especially for original art work from real artists. There was a speech made that opened the project and it was said that the arrangement with the bar meant that the cost of the art could be kept down. There is a promise of more shows to come and I look forward to it. A great night out."

"A huge uncomfortable echoing airport-lounge style space. Very bad and very expensive beer. Poseur clientele. One good thing - some of the cocktail staff seem to take a pride in what they do, if you like that sort of thing.
