Sheffield City Council
The Sheffield City Council website is well worth visiting. It has all sorts of valuable information. You can get information about the schools in your area, you can give feedback to the council and find out whats on in Sheffield
A local resident contacted me recently to raise concerns over litter, graffiti and other street scene issues, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to talk about some of the initiatives the Council has to tackle this and tell you how you can help.
The Council doesn’t throw rubbish on the floor or leave dog mess in the city’s streets and parks. We don’t daub graffiti on walls and we don’t put up unsightly fly-posters. We do, however, tackle the culprits who think it’s okay to spoil our streets and we do put a lot of time and effort into clearing up after litterlouts.
Each year we are committing more money to improving the city’s streets and environment as we tackle litter, graffiti and vandalism. We’ve issued well in excess of 500 fines to people who throw their litter on the floor, allow their dogs to foul our pavements and parks, put up unsightly fly-posters or daub graffiti on walls and buildings. You can help us stamp out this nuisance problem by reporting acts of graffiti or vandalism to the Police.
We also have a Graffiti Charter that we encourage local businesses to sign up to. In return for having their premises cleared of graffiti free-of-charge businesses undertake to keep it clean and graffiti-free thereafter. You can contact Street Force on 273 4567 for more information about this and to sign up to the scheme.
Did you know that cigarette butts account for about 40 per cent of street litter? Cigarette ends can take up to two years to degrade and contain chemicals harmful to birds and animals.
We’ve recently written to over 400 businesses in the city centre where staff take smoking breaks in the street to warn them that their staff face a £50 fine if they continue to drop their cigarette butts on the floor. We’ve also offered to install metal, wall-mounted bins to discard of cigarette ends cleanly and safely. If you want to talk to someone about cigarette bins for your city centre business contact Richard Eyre at the City Centre Management Team on 273 6895.
We recently gave away 100 ‘Stubbi’ wallets to smokers in the city centre. The wallets are foil-lined and the smoker simply stubs their cigarette out and pops the butt in the wallet for safe disposal later. We are hoping they will be available from local retail outlets soon, but meanwhile you can contact Stubbi & Co. on 020 8505 9287 to purchase your Stubbi wallet.
Fast-food wrappers are a particular problem in many areas of the city. Over in Hillsborough local traders have given us their support for a campaign to keep their streets clean and tidy. Street Force has produced window signs for shops in the centre of Hillsborough that spell out the cost of dropping litter. The message is simple ‘How much does a burger cost in Sheffield? - £50 if you drop the package’. Supertram bosses have also backed the campaign and agreed to display the notices in their windows. Contact Street Force on 0114 273 4567 to find out how you can get involved in campaigns like this.
Schoolchildren in the city are also being targeted and are getting the message loud and clear with our ‘Wicked Waste’ campaign. A number of secondary schools have taken part in community clean-ups and learned about the effects of litter during lessons and school assemblies.
Chewing gum presents another problem for us all. It doesn’t degrade quickly and can stick around for up to 20 years if not removed properly. So we are blitzing chewing gum on the city centre streets again this year as part of our ongoing efforts to cut down on the sticky problem.
Please contact me at leader@sheffield.gov.uk if you have questions, comments or suggestions on how we might make a difference to your life in our city.
I will listen and continue to keep working hard with the people of Sheffield to make this city a better place to live, work and invest.
