Tsunami News - How Can You Help?

Many people moved by the Tsunami disaster are contacting charities to volunteer their time or are even travelling to the affected regions to try and help.

But in reality, these well meaning would-be volunteers could be as much of a hindrance as a help to authorities struggling to cope with displaced people and the victims of the tragedy. But volunteers could be needed in the long term Ė in six months to a yearís time, once the immediate effects have been dealt with, organisations will be able to look at placing volunteers to help the affected regions. There are also lots of opportunities within the UK to help relevant charities and other worthwhile causes.

International Volunteering
There is now a wide range of things to do for both qualified professionals and those with little or no career experience. Longer term placements can last two years but for those with less time to spare, there are now shorter term projects for a couple of months or even a few weeks. It is likely that there will be placements related to the disaster in the next year but other more general opportunities can range from monitoring whale populations in Mozambique, to marketing Panama hats in Ecuador, to building a bakery in Bangladesh, to an environmental project in Sicily or teaching English in the mountains of Armenia. Volunteering in the UK
If you canít go abroad, there are literally thousands of volunteering opportunities in this country. To help sort, deliver or sell donations for the current relief effort get in touch with the Red Cross www.redcross.org.uk or Oxfam www.oxfam.org.uk As well as traditional roles like working in charity shops, other volunteering opportunities could find you giving tours for a National Trust property, walking dogs for a rescue centre, or taking disadvantaged young people on adventure sports outings.

2005 is the Year of the Volunteer so find out about all the ways you can make a difference by visiting www.yearofthevolunteer.org
