The WXPG food review - Shimul Indian Restaurant
Although not customary for us to review two Indian restaurants consecutively, on encountering the two ambitious owners of Shimul we felt justified to put them to the test.

WXPG Food Review - The Jailhouse Restaurant

This was a nice restaurant with good food at a good price in a lovely location – one with a lot of history. Well worth a visit for a relaxing evening out.

The Jailhouse Restaurant at The Garrison Hotel, Hillsborough Barracks, Penistone Road, Sheffield, S6 2GB

*Key: FBA = First Bite Appeal

The staff: All staff well dressed and very welcoming; friendly but retaining the right level of professionalism.

Atmosphere: The restaurant is very large and spacious, able to seat around 150 people comfortably and you would still not feel overly crowded. The restaurant is beautifully laid out with large windows providing a lot of natural light. They did however have an odd choice of music; perhaps it would be more fitting to play more classical music.

The Menu: At first glance the menu is varied, plenty of choice for every diner. The vegetarian choices look highly appetising and meal prices are good value.

Wine List: A varied wine list with 33 wines to choose from. A very comprehensive menu to those who want to know more about the wine before they decide to buy it. We ordered a bottle of the house red and the house white – we were not disappointed. Le Grand Duc was served to us – the red served at the right temperature and the white nicely chilled.

Starters:

Tomato Soup
Nice to find a tomato soup done properly – we are too often disappointed! This was a beautifully fresh tomato soup with a nice texture to it. Although it needed to be slightly warmer on serving.
Team score – 7/10

Mushroom Melt
Large slices of mushroom topped with a creamy sauce, perfectly cooked pasta and a cheesy topping. Although the presentation was not at its best the taste value marked up this dish.
FBA: The fresh mushrooms were immediately noticeable.
Team score – 8/10

Wild Boar Terrine
This terrine had a nice consistency and was served with Melba toast. A great starter meal served with a side salad. The chef mixed up a salad dressing especially for us - delicious.
Team Score – 7/10

Main Courses:

Mustard Pork Medallions
This dish had a rich mustard sauce which complemented the tender pork well. The spring onions and mushrooms added a lot of flavour. It was served with a side dish of vegetables – all of which were perfectly cooked although presentation left a little to be desired.
Team Score – 7/10

Mushroom and Bean Stroganoff
FBA: The paprika gave a lovely kick to this dish.
There was plenty of flavour and texture to this great vegetarian option. It was served with rice which, was cooked just right, and garlic bread. The garlic bread was an odd accompaniment and a little too dry.
Team Score – 7/10

Minted Salmon Fillet
FBA: The fresh mint and lemon in the sauce complimented the salmon perfectly.
The salmon was wonderfully cooked and the sauce was divine – an excellent fusion of flavours.
Team Score – 8½ /10

Desserts:

Treacle Sponge and Custard
Nice textured treacle sponge with custard. A nice traditional English pudding but nothing special.
Team Score – 6½ /10

Chocolate Pudding
This pudding was again served with custard. For all those chocolate lovers – not enough chocolate and too much custard.
Team score – 5/10

Summer Fruits Pudding
FBA: Presentation was wonderful – a refreshing dessert served on a summer fruit coulis and garnished with red currents, blackcurrants and strawberries. This was a nice light dessert to end a good meal with.
Team Score – 8/10

Summary
This was a nice restaurant with good food at a good price in a lovely location – one with a lot of history. Well worth a visit for a relaxing evening out.
