Yorkshire Society "promoting the county"
It was thought that with the collapse of many of our traditional industries there may be a certain feeling of loss of identity and local pride.
But there are those who would argue that to represent the people and heritage of Yorkshire within sets of confined stereotypical images that grew out of the Industrial Revolution is to confine a world view of the County. The broad and diverse communities that make up modern day Yorkshire could never be accurately represented in sound bites about "tykes", coal miners, weavers in clogs, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding or the Bronte's. These images place far too many limitations on the expectations the rest of the world can have of us. There is nothing preventing us competing among the best with what we do well. We have a huge base of skills represented in tourism industry, commerce, the arts, education, politics, finance and technology.
As the largest county in the country, 21st Century Yorkshire cannot afford to limit its opportunities. Society members are able to network on a regional and global level either as individuals or business to business.
The Yorkshire Society welcomes, and would like to encourage, applications for membership from individuals, charities or businesses interested in carrying the message about Yorkshire and its unique character into the world. Membership fees contribute to funds used for charitable donation and sponsorship of Yorkshire based charities and initiatives. Information about how to join the society can be found on our website www. yorkshiresociety.org.uk
