The Yorkshire Society was founded in 1980 to provide a forum for people living or working in the region who wish to have a focus for celebration of all that is special and unique about the county. The Society also introduced the idea of a Yorkshire Day. Each year on August 1st a Civic Procession is hosted by a town or city in the county. It is attended by many officials including all the Lord Mayors in Yorkshire who parade in their full regalia. The choice of this date has historical significance for the county. The law to abolish slavery in this country was introduced on August 1st 1807 by the Yorkshire born politician, William Wilberforce.
