Henderson joins the Hallamshire!

Hallamshire Academy of Tennis was first launched in February 2004 on the arrival of Head Tennis Coach Gary Henderson.

Henderson, a record 9 times Yorkshire singles champion and former British number 5, was joined at the club by Jason Torpey (a World ranked player) and Dave Marray who had been working for the LTA with some of Britain’s leading tennis players. Completing the coaching team for this new tennis academy was Mark Thornton, James Harding and Mark Eade.

“Sport’s no fun without having people of a similar standard to play against. Our rating system ensures every game is competitive at its own level.”

The aim of the tennis programme is to provide tennis opportunities for all abilities and all ages. The structure is based around a club ratings system that allows new members easy integration with players of a similar standard. “Sport’s no fun without having people of a similar standard to play against. Our rating system ensures every game is competitive at its own level.”

Hallamshire’s calendar of events allows all members to have the opportunity to play either social or more competitive tennis. Thirteen adult and thirty-four junior coaching classes gives players the opportunity to receive expert tuition from a licensed LTA qualified coach. Hallamshire is represented in almost all the local and national team competitions and training for these are twice a week.

As an LTA Mini Tennis accredited club, we offer 15 mini tennis classes for all ages 4–10 years old. “The academy’s mini tennis programme aims to provide a fun introduction to tennis through well structured sessions with experienced mini tennis coaches”
(Mark Thornton – Mini Tennis Manager).
