The appointments of Ian Woosnam and Nick Faldo as the next European Ryder Cup captains have been welcomed by their fellow tour professionals. Committee member Colin Montgomerie said: "We broke protocol and picked two captains which we felt was a very, very positive thing to do."

Tiger Woods says the PGA Tour should consider cutting back its tournament schedule to get the game’s best players at the same events more often.Woods was speaking ahead of the USPGA Ford Championship at Miami’s Doral Golf Resort where 11 of the world’s top 12 players are taking part.

Jose Maria Olazabal has denied reports that he has thrown his hat into the ring for the Ryder Cup captaincy. Ian Woosnam and Nick Faldo are the leading contenders for the role in Ireland in 2006, but Olazabal is also on the "suitable candidate" list.

Organisers of the Open are set to give women the chance to qualify for golf’s oldest major championship. Peter Dawson, chief executive of the Royal and Ancient Club which runs the Open, said a change to the entry form will allow women to enter the event.

European tour confirms China date
The European Tour has announced a fifth tournament, the TCL Classic, will be played in China this season. Colin Montgomerie will be one of the biggest drawcards at the tournament, to be held at Yalong Bay Golf Club, Hainan Island, from 17-20 March.

Q.  The top of a ball in a hazard is covered by leaves so that it is    not visible when the player addresses it. However the ball is visible    from another angle. Is it permissible for the player to remove enough    leaves to see the ball when addressing it?
