Allergies - It's That Time of Year... ACHOO!!!

Many patients come to me at this time of year complaining of typical allergy symptoms.

  • Sneezing
  • Eyes watering
  • Blocked sinuses
  • Water-like nasal secretion - Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Rashes and itching
  • Skin blotches, etc…

All these symptoms lead to frustration as they make you uncomfortable and irritable like having a permanent cold!!!

The term ALLERGY defines an immunologically mediated reaction to a foreign antigen (allergen) manifested by tissue inflammation (release of histamine - serotin - palelet activator cell) and organ dysfunction. Allergic hypersensitivity disorder may be local or systemic. Because the allergen is foreign, the skin and respiratory tract are the organs most frequently involved in allergic disease. The allergic disease can be classified according to the immunologic mechanism involved in pathogenesis; to the organ system affected; and to the nature and the source of the allergen. However and independently by classification the various clinical manifestations always depends on the organs from where they initiated. On a more serious note allergies can trigger asthma attacks in all ages which is no fun for anyone especially children.

Allergies are caused by many things in life and to pinpoint the allergy can at times prove very difficult. At this time of the year hay fever is typical as the weather changes and the pollen count rises, for this, simple medication in the form of antistaminic drugs can work wonders and can keep you free from the sniffles.

On the Costa del Sol where the wind is almost always present, dust and sand can cause an allergic reaction, for this type of allergy it maybe necessary to use nose sprays and eye drops as well as antistaminic drugs to keep you free from the fastidious symptoms.

The best way to prevent allergy reactions is to eliminate the allergenic substances, which is extremely difficult, so we have to concentrate on eliminating the inflammatory reaction, which derives from the contact of the allergenic substances and the antibodies.

If you have persistent allergy symptoms it is a good idea to have an allergy test which is simple and quick. A series of pin pricks and drops are positioned to your forearms and after a short period of time these manifest and indicate whether you are allergic to a range of things (dust - animals - sand - plants - some food substances). Once the allergy or allergies have been established your doctor can prescribe the correct treatment. In some cases you can have a series of injections over a period of time which can eliminate the allergy altogether, you doctor will tell you if this is necessary or not. A solution to your allergy can always be found!!
