What is Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a natural healing technique that is taken very seriously in Japan

In Japanese, SHIATSU means “finger pressure”, a technique that includes massage by pressure using fingers, thumbs, feet and palms. The Japanese Ministry of Health
defines Shiatsu as the manipulation of the human skin to correct internal malfunctions without the use of instruments, mechanical or otherwise, in order to promote and maintain health, and treat specific diseases.

Shiatsu is a physical therapy that supports and strengthens the body’s natural ability to heal and balance itself. It works on the whole person, not just with the physical body, but also with the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of being.

Shiatsu massage helps remove blockages of energy within our body by realigning meridian points, easing the body and mind.

When one balances qi, or vital energy, healing occurs in the body. The nervous and immune systems are both stimulated by applying pressure to the meridians, providing relief for both body and mind.

Shiatsu also restores the circulatory system, improving blood flow throughout the body. Shiatsu originated in Japan from traditional Chinese medicine, with influences from more recent Western therapies. Although Shiatsu means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese, in practice a practitioner uses touch, comfortable pressure and manipulative techniques to adjust the body’s physical structure and balance its energy flow.

It is a deeply relaxing experience widely used in Japan and regular treatments can alleviate stress and illness and maintain health and well-being.
