Last Friday, April 13 was held HC Marbella International Hospital for the first time in Spain the MUSE (Medigus Ultrasonic Surgical Endostapler) procedure by Dr. Víctor M. Aguilar Urbano, Specialist in Gastroenterology of HC Marbella, performed with his team the first case in Spain for the definitive treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
This was peformed on a 39-year-old patient with chronic symptomatic GERD and treatment with antisecretory medication. "The intervention has been successful and the patient's recovery very fast. The system transmits great effectiveness and reliability during the procedure, "states Dr. Aguilar.
Dr. Aguilar Urbano highlights “the MUSE system as an important alternative for the treatment of this type of patients avoiding the inconveniences of a surgical treatment.”
Treatment for gastroesophageal reflux
Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) is a common disease that causes pyrosis (retrosternal burning sensation) and regurgitation. It is increasingly clear that reflux above the upper esophageal sphincter (supraesophageal reflux) can lead to a series of laryngeal and aerodigestive diseases. Approximately 30% of such patients have symptoms that are not adequately controlled with medication and this can also have side effects as a result of very long pharmacological treatments. The new MUSE system (Medigus Ultrasonic Surgical Endostapler), is distributed in Spain by Izasa Hospital S.L.U. It is a non-surgical solution that eliminates or minimizes the symptomatology and allows these patients to stop medication.
In what does the precedure consist?
The system is disposable, that is, it is of a single use for each patient, so there is no risk of cross contamination.
The system is very safe because it is guided by video and ultrasound, indicates the relative position and evaluates the thickness of the tissue. It has an alignment mechanism that ensures the correct position of the staples, achieving an absolute control of the alignment and thickness of the tissue to staple.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, at 6-8 hours of the procedure the patient can go home. The only necessary preparation is the fasting of the patient and 2 weeks after the procedure the patient can perform a normal diet.
The MUSE system is considered a more widely proven alternative to medication or surgery. Currently, there are hundreds of procedures performed throughout the world and multiple clinical studies that demonstrate its efficacy and safety. A recent published study describes the duration and efficacy of the MUSE system in a follow-up period, with results equal to or greater that a classic, open surgery.
