I recently had the opportunity to visit Benahavis. Although it is not that much Â“inlandÂ”, it certainly is a different world. Just 7 kms from the coast, this mountain village is surrounded by parklands that give it a cosy, romantic, secluded feeling. Situated between Marbella, Estepona and Ronda it enjoys some incredible sea views and easy access to 12 of the Costa del Sol golf courses. La Zagaleta, the highly exclusive mansion club contributes to BenahavisÂ’ status as the richest municipality per capita in AndalucĂa.
Thousands of visitors flock to Benahavis each year, but thatÂ’s not just because of the views, the golf and history it is because, renowned for its food and quality
of restaurants, Benahavis has earned its name as the dining room of the Costa del Sol. This is where one can best appreciate a true Andcalucian lifestyle, genuine Spanish cuisine and most of all some genuine hospitality. There are so many restaurants that the air is filled with all the different aromas that will awake the most dormant of appetites.
Of course, as a rustic mountain village, the main dishes highlight partridge, rabbit, lamb, venison and all kinds of pork products to include some excellent jamon. The
proximity to the coast also guarantees some very fresh fish dishes and some international cuisine. Naturally you cannot have so much good food without the availability of some exceptional wines which we propose to introduce to you each month.
I have had the great pleasure of being invited at the Â“LA ESCALERAÂ” restaurant, in the heart of Benahavis, where I had the opportunity to savour both some excellent food washed down with some excellent Spanish wines, which I understand cannot be bought in supermarkets. These selected wines, supplied by Â“S.G. PĂ©rez VinotecaÂ” are only available at Â“La EscaleraÂ” restaurant bodega once you have had the opportunity to try them with your meal or at certain wine tasting events which hopefully we shall be able to announce as they become known.
La EscaleraÂ” is one of the oldest established restaurants in Benahavis where Manolo is not only the owner but also the chef who will make sure you enjoy your meal even if he has to entertain you himself. Manolo specialises in what can be described as a Mediterranean cuisine, using fresh daily produce to create local traditional dishes coupled with his own added originality to please even the most demanding palate. Do not hesitate to ask for Paella or a Chateaux Briand cooked at your table or a Sirloin cooked on charcoal with garlic sauce if this is what you prefer. Manolo delights himself in surprising diners with innumerable starters.
Visiting Â“La EscaleraÂ” is a most enjoyable experience backed by an incredibly warm hospitality and service at very reasonable prices. Making a special trip just for the culinary experience isrecommended.
