First established in London`s exclusive Knightsbridge La Pappardella has a reputation that precedes it because of its genuine Italian cuisine, prepared with flare and sophistication. The Laguna Village branch has the advantage of a fantastic view of the Mediterranean, adding an even more realistic feeling to the original flavours of the food.

Atmosphere
The settingis quite singular. During the day time you cannot mistake the typical Mediterranean atmosphere. The way the tables are laid, the red and white chequered tablecloths, the gentle breeze, the view to the open Med, the surrounding laguna that needs to be crossed with footbridges, all create a mood that I have not seen anywhere else on the Costa. Now, remove the sun, add a moon to light up the sea surface, put the lights on and you could be anywhere on the Italian litorale; all you need is the singer with his accordion to complete the picture. The whole thing is designed to accompany the flavour of the real Italian quality food that is on offer.

The Menu
All dishes areprepared as ordered. Everything is fresh and as far as traditional ingredients are concerned, they are all imported from
Italy, including the flour which needs to be “00” quality from a grain that is not grown in Italy. This is particularly important to make a proper pizza. The menu itself is very comprehensive offering a good selection of starters, different pastas (usually a first course in Italy) and main courses varying from rice dishes to chicken, meats and fish. The menu is a mouth-watering selection of dishes, to include a good 18 different types of pizza toppings, not to mention the “calzone”.

Wine List
The wine listoffers a selection of good Italian wines, a few Spanish and a choice of real Champagne as you would expect. However we found that the Italian house wine was an excellent choice available in red as well as white.

The Staff
You cannot beatthe Italian welcoming and friendly hospitality. The object is to please the customers to make them feel at home and come back. As we said before, they are Italians and it shows, but they are not overwhelming; they are friendly and polite. What is more important, they are attentive and fairly fast with the service, considering that whatever you order is made and cooked fresh. There is no doubt that you are well attended and looked after by waiters as well as a management who cares and offers as good a service as possible.

STARTERS
While waiting to order the meal and to accompany our drinks, we were offered some tomato pizza for us to try their pizza base. This is where you start to notice the difference between real pizza and the rest.
On this occasion, as we were quite a few, it was decided to take an assortment of antipasti for everyone to share.

Antipasto Misto
Large plates of mixed starters were placed on the table for everyone. The whole thing was well presented and it included a fair assortment of mozzarella, stuffed aubergines, Parma ham, salamis, mortadella, and various other cold meats. FBA – It all tasted so good with the tomato pizza and our choice of wine that the whole thing was polished off in no time. All the cheeses and meats, apart from the local vegetables and other fresh produces, were undoubtedly original. You can tell from the taste: there is a difference between “jamon” and what certainly is “prosciutto”.

MAIN COURSES
The following are just a few of the dishes tried on the night, however it should be noted that every one present agreed that the food was superb.

Fettuccine Frutti di Mare
Flat pasta cooked “al dente” and garnished with a fresh, light tomato sauce and an assortment of sea foods like prawns, clams and mussels, as part of the tomato sauce. FBA– A sea flavoured dish that does not taste of fish. All you have to do is close your eyes and think of anywhere in Italy by the sea; Naples would be a good place to start. If you try this once, you will not be able to help yourself and order it again, time after time.

Tortelloni Pappardella
They are a similar pasta to ravioli but shaped different and filled with spinach and ricotta. They can only be made fresh and cooked right away, and then garnished with a tomato sauce and mushrooms. FBA – In this case the tomato sauce was very creamy and blended extremely well with the choice of mushrooms, leaving a lingering taste in the palate that cried out for the next tortellone. Sheer luxury with every mouthful!

Pizza Tropicale
Tomato, mozzarella, pineapple, banana & kiwi. FBA – You have to eat a pizza in Italy to appreciate a real pizza and you have to visit La Pappardella to taste the closest to real pizza I have ever tasted in Spain. There is a lot more to making pizza than what is commonly on
offer on the Costa. You can tell by the smell, the look and… the taste.

DESSERTS
No there is no mention of desserts on the menu as they vary each day. The waiter will take bring over a plate displaying a sample of all that is available at the time. And very nice too, much better than trying to imagine what the text means!

Profiteroles
These make a very special ending to a very special meal. The French call them choux a la crème, buns filled with cream and covered in chocolate sauce. FBA – The difference is that these were “decorated with chocolate sauce and accompanied by whipped cream and ice cream. Very rich and just what was needed to round off the meal.

Chocolate Cake
It looked like a lonely slice of cake served with a generous portion of whipped cream decorating a well presented plate. FBA – In reality it was really, really nice, it was moist, very pleasant to the palate and the combination of the cream with the chocolate cream inside the cake was a very wicked concoction for those who may be trying to slim.

Fresh Strawberries
One of us preferred the fresh taste of natural strawberries and very refreshing it was too!

Beware of the “Limoncello” chupitos that are offered on the house; a traditional Neapolitan Liqueur made with lemon and served ice cold. Very refreshing, it hits the spot, but you must resist overdoing it, it’s quite strong!

SUMMARY
This is an excellent Italian restaurant, well in keeps with the fame of La Pappardella chain of restaurants; I dare say that it is the best located of all, mainly because of the unique setting, accessibility and good parking facilities. Like the other Pappardellas, it is run with pride and with the sole object of pleasing all their customers. For the quality of food and service being offered, the price is excellent value for money. Every single person attending was contented and the general comments made were unanimous: “Very good service, friendly staff, lovely setting. Good ambience, no waiting, good food, “will come back”.
