NVQ Level 3 Award - GP Referrals - The answers to some relevant questions

The Sports Department of Mayfair International Academy are in the process of adding a new and exciting NVQ level 3 to the currently available programmes.  Students who acquire their NVQ Level 3 Personal Trainer will then have the opportunity to achieve the Level 3 GP Referrals.

So what are GP Referrals?
GP Referrals are when doctors refer a patient to a Personal Trainer to design a safe and effective exercise programme for them.  It may be for rehabilitation after an injury or surgery, due to an illness, or simply because the doctor thinks that his patient needs to get in better shape for health reasons.  There are many conditions that can be improved with exercise and maintaining a healthier lifestyle such as Coronary Heart Disease, Hypertension, Stroke, Diabetes, Obesity, etc, etc.

Why this sudden increase in GP referrals?
The contributing factor is the better training and certification of exercise professionals. With more and more personal trainers having received training in working with special populations, doctors are feeling more comfortable recommending that their patients seek the services of a qualified trainer.                  The UK has seen a rise of between 20% and 40% in GP Referrals in the year up to Spring 2008 and Personal Trainers are ensured a steady flow of work.

How do I become a Personal Trainer?
To become a Personal Trainer you would first need to be a fitness instructor with a high level of experience and advanced qualifications.  A Personal Trainer certificate is level 3. Doing a course which allows you to gain entry on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), also known as the 'Exercise Register', will improve your chances of employment. To work as a Personal Trainer you must have public liability insurance and a first aid certificate which includes a cardio-pulmonary resuscitation certificate (CPR).

Where can I find such a course, in Spain?

Mayfair International Academy in Atalaya Park is the only registered centre for CYMCA fitness qualifications in Spain and one of only three in mainland Europe.    The Academy is also a centre for Heartstart through the British Heart Foundation and is authorised to deliver Heartstart First Aid Certificates which include CPR.

How old do I have to be to do the Personal Trainer course?
To start on the Personal Trainer Course you must first hold an NVQ Level 2 Gym Instructor Certificate.  Students at Mayfair Academy achieve their level one Assistant Gym Instructor during years 10 and 11 i.e. fifteen to sixteen years of age then progress to level two Gym Instructor during year 12 and finally Personal Trainer in year 13.

Are there any other Fitness Qualifications on offer?
Once you have achieved the NVQ Level 2 Gym Instructor you will then be offered ‘add-ons’  such as Exercise to Music, Step Aerobics, Spinning, Body Pump, etc.

Can I achieve any other qualifications during this time?
The Academy is also a registered centre for AQA unit awards, CSLA (Community Sports Leaders Award), BAWLA (British Amateur Weight Lifters Award), FA (Football Association), DoE International Award (Duke of Edinburgh) and Heartstart through the British Heart Foundation.  On the academic side, Mayfair International Academy is also a registered CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) Centre and an examination centre for AQA (Assessment & Qualifications Alliance), the largest of the three English exam boards for GCSE and A Level.  Students on the Sports Curriculum are expected to achieve six GCSE qualifications as well as the above awards.

What is the youngest age at which I can achieve a Sports Award?
From the age of four, students attending Mayfair International Academy start to achieve sporting awards through the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) with continuous weekly swimming lessons from the start of term in September straight through to the end of June.  Pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 follow a regular curriculum but have the option of extra curricular sessions in the fitness centre where they can achieve AQA unit awards in sports.

Can I enter University with an NVQ?
Yes, you can enter university with a NVQ, in fact a Mayfair student has just gained entry at the prestigious Bath University with NVQ level 3 and the required GCSEs. NVQs or National Vocational Qualifications are practical qualifications achieved through assessment and training.  There are five levels with level 1 being equivalent of GCSEs D to G grades, level 2 equivalent to GCSE A* to C grades, level 3 equivalent to A Level, IB or BTEC.

It is interesting to note that although qualifications such as BTEC, HNCs or HNDs, foundation degrees, Honours degrees and postgraduate qualifications are the equivalent to NVQ at levels 4 and 5, these qualifications in exercise and sports science, sports therapy or sports studies along with at least six months’ up-to-date work experience may only allow provisional entry to the REPs but, to gain full entry, you would need to show competence in the workplace by completing an NVQ.  This again shows the quality and high level of competence required to achieve a National Vocation Qualification at this level.
