Devil may care by Sebastian Faulks

Penguin (ISBN 9780718154189) - 20€ (Trade paperback)

Bond is back! With all the characteristics of the spy we loved in the 1960s, his legacy continues.

This time Sebastian Faulks has been asked by Ian FlemingÂ’s family to mark the 100th anniversary of the creatorÂ’s birth with this new book. His own record is strong enough, with Birdsong and Charlotte Gray both bestsellers and he seems to have enjoyed the process.

We’re back in 1967, in the midst of the Cold War, and Bond finds himself in action across two continents. There is none of the ‘modernisation’ of previous Bond spin-offs from the likes of Kingsley Amis and John Gardner, or in the movie adaptations. No, we’re in the era where spies were spies, and women were a weakness. The locations are glamorous and the enemy as dark and unyielding as ever.

The family are said to be delighted and even film producer Barbara Broccoli claims that, had her father found the book, he would have believed it to be from Fleming himself and filmed it. There are no plans to do that yet, and it may take some time, because this is a book that needs special attention. It is a spy adventure with a unique heritage.

The book is available from Bookworld Shops, at their website on and via Mailorder on 952 787 033."
