We have a football team!

If there is one thing that we, foreign residents of the Costa del Sol, have not had and did miss is a football team that we can call our own.

Thanks to Ian Radford and Wayne Elliott of Hi Group and Alfredo Guarisoli of G2 Producciones this is no longer the case.

The three business men have recently announced their investment in the Union Deportiva de Marbella, effectively MarbellaÂ’s football club. Additionally, the signing of an important new sponsor, Sanyres, is also giving a renewed air of confidence to the Marbella club, and the team players have been proudly sporting their new strip since mid October.

But it is not just a question of money; the new team also bring with them a new wealth of experience in international football at the highest level and good marketing knowledge. A former commercial director of Leeds United, Wayne Elliott is confident that his expertise can help catapult the club into a different league. RadfordÂ’s sports management experience and contacts with Premiership clubs in the UK, are a promise exciting plans in the way of friendly matches with leading British teams against UD Marbella in the near future.

Since the takeover a new trainer has already been appointed, Oliverio “Oli” Jesús Alvarez Gonzalez, who previously played and trained in top Spanish teams, Real Oviedo and Real Betis and the national squad, the club has moved up in the league to 2º Division B. Sunday 28 October’s 1-0 win against favourites Alcalá, comes on the back of two impressive away wins against Cartagena and Merida.

With the investment and strong management the new team believe that they will improve the clubÂ’s standing in the league and bring together MarbellaÂ’s international community.

With a stadium that can that can accommodate 9,000 spectators in the heart of Marbella, the incredible number of foreign residents that live in Marbella and on the Costa I canÂ’t see why we canÂ’t start to be proud of our own football club in the heart of Marbella, after all Marbella is the Costa del Sol.

Perhaps this the way ahead to improve the recent international poor image we have acquired. Let’s start showing solidarity behind our football team, let’s help increase the membership to 2,000 push them to move up into the second division ‘A’.
