I was born on the 8th May 1913 to Jewish parents in Johannesburg, South Africa. I worked as a diamond cutter, hairdresser, dance tutor and part time boxer in fairgrounds before becoming a professional actor. I met my first wife at a hairdressing salon in Kroonstad, but I wanted to be an actor and got a job with the South African Broadcasting Corporation. In 1940 I divorced because of my relationships with other women, I did marry again, divorced and then again with Valerie Assan for the same reason. During the Second World War I became a lieutenant in the South African Army’s entertainment unit. I ended up in Britain in 1946, worked in repertory until spotted for the post-war film industry. I worked with Alec Guinness, Stanley Holloway and even Tony Hancock. But I am best remembered for my acting in a series of well known comedy films. I died of a massive heart attack in Sunderland at the age of 62 on 26th April 1976. WHO AM I?
