Ice Rink to remain closed

Following the death in August of 3 people, two of them British, from an outbreak of Legionnaires Desease, the Ice rink, gymnasium and swimming pool at the Club Municipal de Hielo de Arroyo de la Miel were closed down.

Another 15 persons were also infected. Andalusia’s regional health minister Jose Villalobos blamed the outbreak on “irregular conduct” by Gecosol Wellness, a private company which manages the Club Municipal de Hielo ice rink and the outbreak was traced to a cooling tower at the ice rink.

Although the gymnasium and the swimming pool are due to be re-opened to the public this month, the Ayuntamineto de Benalmadena is now considering doing away with the ice rink all together and replacing it with more facilities for basket ball, net ball and b minton.

The Mayor, Mr Javier Calvaro, states that the ice rink is unprofitable; meanwhile the Judicial system is still considering a level of multa (fine) that might be in the region of 30,000 Euros. We have not seen any comments being made about compensation to the families for the loss of life.
