How would you like to live on a luxury cruise ship and get paid for it? Or does this seem like an impossible dream?
Imagine waking to a view of the Pitons in St Lucia or watching the green flash as the sun disappears beyond the horizon, whilst a steel band plays in the distance and you mingle with the guests, sipping pina coladas. Waking to the dramatic outline of St Vincent, with its active volcano Soufriere, then sailing south to the whaling island of Bequia in the Grenadines or Mustique, the favourite holiday destination of the late Princess Margaret. In the northern part of the Caribbean, cruise ships call at the US Virgin Islands of St Thomas and St John, Puerto Rico, and St Maarten in the Lesser Antilles, the half Dutch, half French island.
The South Pacific, from the thrill of blue water passages to the serenity of sheltered, crystal clear lagoons surrounded by living coral gardens. Polynesia (which means many islands) and includes the Society Islands of Bora Bora and Tahiti, immortalised by Gaugins paintings. The Kingdom of Tonga, Cook Islands, Samoa, lesser known Niue and the Tuamotu Archipelago along with the Austral Islands.
There are more than 25,000 islands and islets scattered over millions of square kilometres of Pacific Ocean!
From the Caribbean and South Pacific to Alaska or remote and exotic parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America, there are hundreds of destinations and cruise ships. Many young people and some not so young, would love the opportunity to work aboard a cruise ship but most would have no idea at all of how to go about securing a job or of what credentials they would need.
If they have previously worked in a hospitality related job there is a good chance that they will have enough experience to perform some of the wide variety of jobs on board a cruise ship but, cruise ship jobs are very competitive.
Jobs which might not call for any formal qualifications e.g. Gift Shop Sales Assistant will, more than likely, have thousands of applicants. If the applicant is already experiencing difficulty finding a position in a land-based company, then the chances of securing the same position on a cruise ship is very slim. With that in mind, a young person with no work experience at all and, worse, no qualifications, might decide that the dream would remain just that an impossible dream!
However, there is a solution.
All the major cruise lines employ Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers and these qualifications can be acquired right here on the coast.
A CYMCA Fitness Instructor certificate is recognised world-wide and held in high esteem. Many cruise lines state that applicants would require a CYMCA certificate with Exercise to Music or Aerobics Training, Resistance Training and BAWLA.
With this certificate in hand you could hold the key to a new career and there has never been a better time to be looking for work in the cruise line industry as, at the moment, the cruise industry is absolutely booming. It is estimated that over 11 million North Americans will take a cruise next year.
A cruise ship carrying 2,000 passengers will require about 1,000 crew members that is an awful lot of positions to fill. Staff turnover is high so the cruise lines are always hiring! Contracts vary but are normally 6 months. The hours are long but the rewards are high. A Fitness Instructor on a cruise ship can expect to earn between $1,000 and $2,200 per month. Most of this money can be saved as living expenses are minimal.
So, how to become qualified? Simple! Mayfair International Academy operate a distance learning course for a CYQ Level 2 Fitness Instructor. This is the standard entry route for anyone wanting to work as a freelance Fitness Instructor or as an employed Instructor in a Gym, Health and Fitness Centre or Leisure Centre.
The course covers, learning about the body systems and their response to training, learning how to plan and teach exercise sessions and being taught risk assessment and legalities. Students are given a Distance Learning Exercise and Fitness Knowledge and Gym Training Pack on enrolment and are given up to 90 days to study, with telephone support.
The theory exam and practical training take place over three weekends. Upon completion, the student has a new career as a Fitness Instructor.
Between 2000 and 2006, major cruise lines launched 74 new cruise ships with 23 more planned over the next three years. The majority of these ships are mega ships carrying over 2,000 passengers meaning more job positions becoming available. Accompanied by a well respected qualification such as a CYQ Fitness Instructor Certificate you could be heading for some of the most sought after sailing destinations on the planet.
