And so to bed!

And so to bed!

Long hot nights can disturb a good night’s sleep, changing your décor could help

The bedroom should be relaxing at any time of the year and make you sleep comfortably. The designing and décor of this room of your home should not have any distracting item that attracts your attention away from your comfort.

When planning a restful bedroom for your summer home its important to remember to take the climate into account and try to enhance any cooling aspects that the room already has, for example, views of water such as the sea, river or lake should be made use of and a tall window that provides the full view of the cool scene outside should never be missed.

Views of gardens, trees and mountains are relaxing too and can add an airy feel to the room. Instead of covering your windows with curtains, you can leave them unobstructed to enjoy beautiful views; try instead placing light Voile or net curtains around your bed to block the sunrays from disturbing your morning sleep.

Curtaining around your bed being teamed with soft pillows and throws lends a romantic and fantasy Arabian Nights look to your bedroom décor plus making it look cosier and more intimate.

If you have a habit of reading books in bed, be sure to provide an attractive reading lamp on both sides of the bed, this will create a more even lighting effect.  For an old fashioned feel, you can add bulky antique furniture pieces that make the room look lavish, but stick to one or two pieces at the most to avoid  stuffiness in the room.

A modern, pale coloured rug gives a fresh look to a room with the minimum of effort, plus acting as a good noise barrier on marble or tiled floors. Most new build properties in Spain will have modern big-sized windows and these can be a bit daunting at first, especially if you are more used to the “cottage” style windows used in many older English houses.

Sheer or translucent curtains can make the room look and feel open and airy, which is the look you are hoping to achieve in a hot country, try to open up the room and maximise the space you have by not covering any natural light sources.

Maintain harmony in the room and stick to pale and light colours for summers. White bedspreads make the room look cooler. Walls can be tinted white or pale green, yellow or blue in subdued and muted tones to maintain the relaxing effect. But above all decorate the room to your tastes; your bedroom should be the one room in the house where you can feel really relaxed and “private” it can act as your little haven, and for this reason it should reflect your individual style and be full of the colours and textures you feel most at home with.
