Mardi Gras

New Orleans battered residents put their months of anger and frustration on parade at this yearÂ’s biggest world street party Mardi Gras.

Many of the floats were covered in blue tarpaulin (much of the city still being under tarpaulin after the devastation of hurricane Katrina) and with themes like “Fridge over troubled waters” gave themselves a desperately needed first laugh after the nightmare of Katrina.

Armed with images such as the blue tarpaulins that still protect many of the damaged roofs across the city, the clubs that stage the Mardi gras parades are targeting hurricane Katrina and the politicians they blame for the chaotic response to the catastrophe.

Mardi Gras has long been an occasion for the city to laugh at tragedy and aim barbs at authorities, and given all the pain New Orleans has suffered in the past year the irreverence should reach new heights this season.
