Put your best foot forward

“Now it’s time to teeter around in your mules, sling backs, sexy sandals and flip flops. Do your feet look more like something out of Babe than Babewatch? Well, get those trotters out and transform them using our quick DIY pedicure guide”, says Kerry Tooke.

  • Remove any existing nail polish using a non acetone polish remover.
  • Soak feet for 5 to 10 mins in a bowl of warm water with a few drops of peppermint or lavender oil added to it. Alternatively, add slices of cucumber and mint.
  • Apply a foot scrub and put your feet back into the water to rinse off.
  • Lightly dry feet and, while still damp, gently push back cuticles. Use an orange stick which has a thin piece of cotton wool wrapped around it and has been dipped in anti bacterial tea tree oil, or a cuticle remover product.
  • Using a foot file buff wet feet and use on any problem areas.
  • Shape nails by cutting straight across and then filing smooth.
  • Massage in a rich cream or balm. The skin on the bottom of your feet is 15 times thicker than the skin on your face so you need something substantial to rub in. (If you have time you can wrap your feet in cling film for 5 to 10 minutes for that extra pampering).
  • Using the polish remover, clean off any residue of cream from the nails.
  • Separate the toes using a toe separator or rolled up tissue and apply a thin layer of base coat.
  • Apply 2 coats of nail polish and a top coat.
  • Remove any smudges with a cotton wool bud dipped in nail varnish remover.
  • Allow sufficient time for the nails to dry and off you trot!

Top Tip
Use pale pastel shades if youÂ’re not good at applying nail polish as mistakes will not show up as much as if you use darker tones.

Hot Colours
Coral and metallics are the ‘inÂ’ colours to wear this summer. For a fun and trendy alternative check out LancĂ´meÂ’s Juicy Vernis range priced at €15.50. OPI also have some zingy orange tones that look great with a tan (try Dress to Empress and DonÂ’t Be Koi With Me shades) – from €13.
