Beauty tips

The healthier we are, the better we look.

With the coming of spring and the approaching hot weather, we thought that this might be an appropriate moment to remind us that health and beauty are inseparable. It is not really difficult to try and stay healthy, so why do we tend to ignore some of the basic and most simple things that we could do to stay healthy and young looking.

Some do's and don'ts to keep you looking your best:
• Don't smoke. Smoking damages the microcirculation to the skin, making it dull, grey and lifeless. Your hair is affected in the same way. Smoking also leads to the early formation of wrinkles, especially fine lines around the mouth. Many models smoke partly as an attempt to keep slim, but they are wrecking their own career. If you want to stop smoking and need some help, try
• Keep alcohol intake to a moderate level, no more than 14 units a week. The most important thing is to try to avoid binges where you drink all your allowance in one go, as this is particularly toxic to the liver. If you are addicted to alcohol it might help you to look at
• Make sure you enjoy a healthy, balanced diet - with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to provide essential vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. Some suggestions are available at nccdphp/dnpa/tips/index.htm


• Regular exercise will help to make your skin glow, give you beautiful poise, and help you to keep in good shape. Getting fit doesn't mean being confined to a sweaty gym or paying homage to stretch latex in an aerobics studio. Choose an activity that you actually enjoy and you're more likely to stick with it. So if you like dancing in your kitchen, cycling to work or walking your dog - this all counts as regular exercise!
• Cover up in the sun. The big danger is ultraviolet light A (UVA rays), which cause the collagen in the skin to break down, making the skin thinner and helping wrinkles to form. See May edition as a "What's News" article.

• Get enough sleep. Sleep is essential for body repairs, and keeps body and soul ticking along as they should. Deep sleep is the part of sleep that our body and brain needs to recover from the day.

• Find effective ways to deal with stress. Don't let it show in your face and posture.
• Look after your teeth and have regular check-ups at the dentist.
