Age spots, wrinkled texture, lines and dryness are all sign of ageing due to constant exposure to washing-up water, detergents, sun damage, air conditioning, cold weather, and, of course, they stretch and wrinkle anyway. A good test is to pinch the top of your hand. If the skin does not spring back straight away the ageing process has already began.
There are a few measures we can take to look after our hands and here are a few tips that will help:-
Never wash-up without rubber gloves. Cleaning fluids are the main cause of dry, flaky skin. This also goes for gardening, wear gloves to prevent chaffing or scratching.
Wear plastic gloves when handling strong smelling foods such as garlic and onions. This will prevent having to scrub your hands later to erase the odour.
Always keep a good moisturizing soap in the kitchen. Dont use washing-up liquid to wash your hands; it will strip them of their natural oils.
If you have a face exfoliator, use it on your hands weekly. In fact, get yourself a couple of teaspoons of sugar and mix in 2 3 drops of olive or vegetable oil. Massage the mixture into your hands for about 3 minutes, paying special attention to your fingers, then wash off with warm water. Pat dry and your hands will feel smooth and silky.
After washing hands always use a moisturizer, preferably one containing lactic acid and urea, essential hand care chemicals that help to absorb and retain moisture below the skin surface. A moisturizer containing sunscreen will help prevent sun spots.
Have several bottles of hand cream, keep one in your handbag, one by the kitchen sink, one at work and one by the bed. So it will always be handy with no excuse not use it at least twice a day.
Avoid clenching your hands, which we all do from time to time without thinking! Open them out and gently shake them for about 30 seconds, this will also help to relax your arms and shoulders.
Finally, dont forget the golden rule moisturize every night before going to bed, massaging well to stimulate circulation, you will soon see the difference it makes!
