Treat varicose and thread veins now, and look good for next summer say Europa Health Clinic of Marbella

We all have an extensive network of veins running through our bodies, these are not visible, but occasionally and sometimes with age, we can develop thread or varicose veins.

Thread Veins are often known as spider veins or dermal flares. They usually appear on the legs, around the lower nose, upper lip, and sometimes on the cheeks. They are mostly dark red in colour and quite visible through the skin. Varicose Veins are often genetic and affect 60% of the adult population in Europe. They can arise at any time of life, but are more common with increased age.

Prolonged standing and excess weight plus hormonal medications and pregnancy may exacerbate the condition.
Weakness of the vein wall allows valves in the superficial veins to stretch so that they do not close properly. Blood then flows, with raised pressure, back into the leg along these veins causing both the vein and its tributaries to enlarge.

Symptoms of varicose veins can include general discomfort, aching, heaviness, fatigue, burning, throbbing and cramps.

Thrombosis is the inflammation and swelling of the deep veins. Symptoms include, hot, swollen and heavy legs or arms, often painful to the touch. Thrombosis is often an hereditary disorder. This inflammation can
develop through traumatic stress or over exertion and must be treated on the advice of a doctor.

Haemorrhoids can be internal or external piles in the region of the sphincter. This illness can be very painful and is usually treated by surgery. It can be very dangerous to ignore the warning signs of vein disorders and while thrombosis and haemorrhoids can be very painful, they are also serious diseases and the advice of a doctor should be sought at the earliest opportunity.

Similarly thread and varicose veins are unsightly and also a sign of weakened veins and arteries. Therefore, as we get older it is best to have a yearly check up by Ultrasound and Doppler scan or if necessary, with full angiography.

There are lots of ways to help ourselves, some examples are:

  • Drink water, at least 2-3 litre per day
  • Watch your weight
  • Try to eat fresh fruit and vegetables everyday
  • Eat fish and meat twice a week
  • Take extra Vitamin C and Vitamin E
  • Take Zinc, Zinc helps to repair dilated capillary veins.
  • The Horse Chestnut has an anti-infl ammatory effect. The active ingredients inhibit the activity of lysozyme enzymes (Fortschr. Med. Oct. 1983), which can damage walls of veins and capillaries.
  • Regularly exercise (walking, swimming, dancing, stretching)
  • Relieve stress with Tai-Chi, Yoga or similar
