Why spend fortunes on overpriced and often useless beauty products, when your kitchen cupboards are full of natural hair care remedies? After all, Cleopatra never had Toni & Guy!

Repair damaged hair by treating it with oil and egg yolk. Comb olive oil through the hair. Then beat the yolk of 1 egg and massage it in, working from the ends up. Leave on for 10 minutes, then shampoo as usual. Do this once a week for a month and hair should begin to feel healthier.

Condition your hair by applying mayonnaise before shampooing. Apply to dry hair and leave for 1/2 hour, then rinse and shampoo as usual.

For a lemon rinse, blend 1/2 cup of strained lemon juice and 1 cup of distilled water in a bottle. Comb the liquid through your hair after each shampoo.

For a quick, dry shampoo, rub baby powder into your hair and then brush it out thoroughly whether you have artificial hair colour that needs refreshing or you just want to enhance your own shade naturally, customized herbal rinses add highlights or depth and are inexpensive.

If you want to experiment with customizing herbal rinses, there's no real risk because their effect is subtle. However, avoid acidic fruits and vegetables. Do not use lemons for too greater length of time. These are very unpredictable over time and are greatly affected by sun exposure. Lemon juice and the sun might make you blonder the first time you try it, but after several treatments, your hair colour will look like the rings of a tree trunk, in several shades.

To lighten blonde hair, Steep 2 tablespoons of dried chamomile and 2 tablespoons of dried marigold in 1 Litre of boiled water for half an hour. Make certain the temperature is comfortable and then pour through wet hair. For darker hair, substitute sage and rosemary for the herbs above. For extra lustre, add 1 tablespoon cider vinegar. Red heads, mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 2 tablespoons of saffron and add 1 Litre boiled water. Allow to steep for half an hour, check the temperature, and pour slowly through wet hair as a final rinse.
