Home made skin care

This month we look at some recipes for natural skin care products you can make at home.

Many shops now offer beauty products made from natural ingredients, but why pay top prices when you can make your own luxury face and body treatments at home? By blending natural everyday ingredients, not only can you help the environment but have the added bonus of knowing exactly what you are putting on your skin. Our simple recipes use ingredients that can be found in most kitchens.

Carrot facial mask
(Normal to oily skin)
2-3 large Carrots
4.5 tablespoons clear honey
Method
Cook the carrots until very soft, allow to cool and mash with a fork, mix with the honey and stand for a few minutes before applying gently to the face, leave for 10 minutes and rinse with cold water.  

Apple zinger facial mask
(Oily skin prone to acne)
1 medium apple
5 tablespoons clear honey
Method
Peel and grate the apple mix well with the honey and apply direct to the face, leave for 10 minutes then rinse well with cool water.

Glowing skin
(For dry lifeless skin)
1.5 tablespoon Turmeric
5 tablespoons Sandalwood powder
1 tablespoon Almond oil
1 tablespoon milk
Method
Slowly blend all the ingredients together adding the milk a very little at a time until you have a texture like single cream. Apply with cotton wool to the face, neck and back, allow to dry and shower off with warm water.

Almond mayonnaise scrub
(Dry skin)
1.5 cup almonds
2 tablespoons Mayonnaise
Method
Grind the almonds in a blender until they form a stiff paste, add the mayonnaise and blend slowly together until smooth, the mixture can then be used as a face or body scrub for areas that are dry and dull looking.

Banana bread mask
(Soothing and moisturising)
1.5 ripe mashed bananas
2 tablespoons ground oats
2 tablespoons wheat flour
A little cream or milk to soften.
Method
Whip all ingredients together in a food processor adding the cream a little at a time until you have a smooth ,loose paste consistency stand for a few minutes to thicken slightly and then apply to a clean face leaving for 5-10 minutes, rinse well and pat dry.
