INE alerts that in Spain there are
3 million empty apartments
Some 14.9% of residential properties in Spain are unoccupied. Of the 20.94 million apartments accounted for by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE), 3,1 million are empty. The provinces with the greater number of empty properties are Barcelona (with 307,859), Madrid (306.556) and Valencia (208.064).
The provinces with the least empty properties are Ceuta (2.817), Melilla (3.687), Alava (10.527) y Teruel (10.980). This information would seem to underline the fact that the majority of vacant properties are situate in areas where prices have escalated at higher rates. This also supports the fact that about 15% of residential properties in Spain remain dormant awaiting for sale are not at all used for letting.
