I was born in Hayfield (Derbyshire). My original intention was to join the merchant navy, this was thwarted by my poor eyesight, however working as a stage hand and then at an aircraft factory, I joined the army on the eve of WW2, serving in the Middle East where I started to take part in putting up shows for the troops, which sparked my desire to act that resulted in my stage debut in Manchester in 1946.
I appeared on stage under many roles and then featured in no less than 50 films, however in the 60s my transition to television was to mark my real popularity, I appeared as a preacher and in various episodes of Coronation Street, Z Cars, The Avengers. My last character in a well known series is what I will always be remembered by. I died of a stroke in my dressing room in Birmingham before a performance on 15th April 1982. Who am I?
