The best of both worlds

So youÂ’ve done your GCSEÂ’s and youÂ’ve got your results. What now?

There have been loads of enquiries coming through Web Express Guide about sport training instructions and qualifications available on the Costa del Sol, which prompted us to write this article ahead of next yearsÂ’ school registration.

As far as we are aware, the Mayfair Academy would seem to be the only educational institution in Spain that offers a level of education that can include internationally accepted qualifications in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training, in addition to the usual academic GCSE qualifications that are such a necessity for our children. We have asked for the co-operation of Paul Kelly, the headmaster at Mayfair, to assist us in better understanding and explaining what the “sport” curriculum means and we publish his reply follows:

“Let’s assume you don’t really want to do A levels or the IB as you’ve had enough of school as you know it. You’re ready for something different, something challenging, but you still need qualifications to make your way in the world, a qualification that will still open lots of doors, as you are unsure about the future and what you want to do. Perhaps what I need to do is to quote as an example what two pupils at Mayfair International Academy did next. It certainly changed their lives for the better.

Salem Mansuri and Rushton Thorp are both keen sportsmen. They joined Mayfair as year 12 pupils two years ago. Both have followed the NVQ level 2 and 3 qualifications in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training and have now completed all units, meaning that they have a qualification equal to two A Levels.

Salem has an offer for a place at the University of Bath to study Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation and Rushton is keen to put his qualification to good use in gaining experience as a Fitness Instructor / Personal Trainer on a cruise ship before also sailing off to university.

For the purpose of this exercise, I interviewed Salem about his experience as a student on MayfairÂ’s Sports Curriculum:

Salem, what attracted you to the course in the first place?
Well at first I was interested in doing A Level P.E. However, when I heard about the Sports Curriculum I knew it was for me because it had a more ´hands on´ approach to learning. There is a lot of practical assessment on the course and this really suits me, although in some areas there is also a lot of theory!

Who would you recommend this course to?
I think it is great for students who know they would like a career in the sports industry and for those who would enjoy learning about the human body and appreciate how important it is to look after ourselves.

What does the Personal Trainer qualification consist of?
There are 5 ´stand alone´ units: Advanced Gym Instructor, Nutrition and Weight management, Client Appraisal, Business and Marketing and Training in Different Environments. If you successfully pass all 5 then they collectively make up the Personal Trainer qualification.

What are the differences in this course compared to studying ‘A’ Levels?
Well it suited me better, personally, as assessment is much more flexible and is more practical based. Each module is very specific and so I always had a clear focus on what to study. I always viewed the course as a passport to higher education but it also gives the student the option to go into employment in one of the fastest growing industries in the world. I found the small classes very beneficial as there is no hiding!

Any last words?
I would just like to thank my teachers on the program for helping me achieve my goals and, fingers crossed, IÂ’ll be off to Uni this September!

Mayfair International Academy is located at Atalaya Park, Estepona and offers continuous education for pupils aged 4 to 19. Students can choose from the Sports Curriculum or the Standard Curriculum from year 10 onwards. The Academy offers a wide range of subjects at GCSE and A Level.
