ItÂ’s time to look at bulbs

Actually this happens twice a year; the bulbs that flower in spring (Tulip - Hyacinth - Narcissus - etc) need to be planted in the autumn between October and November, which means now, while those that flower in summer (Gladiola - Dahlia - Begonia - etc.)

Soil preparation and planting
• Buy healthy bulbs, hard, they must not seem porous. If you squeeze the base of the bulb gently between your fingers and it collapses, that is definitely a bad one.

• It is important that the soil has good drainage and does not over store water. Too much water in the soil will rot the bulbs and tuberous roots. Clay, heavy soil is usually prone to hold excess water and in such cases it is advisable to mix your soil with some river sand and with some organic material (peat, manure). This will air and improve the drainage.
• Having selected the location of your plants, work well into the soil with the hoe to a depth of 20/25 cm. It is not such hard work as you would not normally have a large area to do, but the soil would then be loose, fine, well mixed and ventilated.
• If you have not already done so, while hoeing it is a good time to add some organic fertiliser as described above, a ratio of 2/3 kg. per square meter is indicated. It is not mandatory to add organic fertiliser at this point, but it is good practice to add reserve feed to the soil for the following year, in any case it also helps with good drainage
• Do not add mineral fertilisers (chemical) only use organic.
• Distance between bulbs
The distance between each bulb depends on the type. Usually it is between 5 and 20 cm. As a rule the large bulbs should have a distance of some 12 cm. from each other and the smaller ones 8-10 cm.
- Crocus & Begonia 2 - 4 cm.
- Hyacinth & Narcissus de 10 - 15 cm.

• The depth at which you plant the bulbs is very important and it varies with the species. As a general rule, the upper part of the bulb should be covered by a layer of earth equivalent to the height of the bulb.
• Bulbs are planted using a hand trowel, to the right depths and distances as required for the individual specie. It is fundamental that you plant the bulbs the correct way up, that is the point where the plant will grow is up and must look up.
• You cover them up as described, you give them a good, generous watering after planting and that is it. You just look after them a little until they flower.
