I was born in Miami prematurely and weighed only three pounds; my chance for survival looked so bleak that my father, certain that I would not survive, obtained a shoebox in which he planned to bury me in. As fate would have it, I survived and went on to grow up in the Bahamas. At sixteen I moved to New York and enrolled at the American Negro Theatre, acting in plays. Gradually I started receiving work in film supporting roles and eventually my win of an Academy Award for best actor, catapulted me into stardom as a sought after leading man which resulted in my appearing in many films that I cannot name without giving away my identity. In the 70Â’s I tried my hand at being a director, which included a successful comedy starring, among others, Richard Pryor. I played strong and dignified characters, which helped open the door for other black actors that followed my lead. WHO AM I?
