The Lanjaron Municipality is within the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, on its Southwestern flank. It is famous for the medicinal properties of its spa, one of the most valued in Spain since the 19th century. Cut across by the Lanjaron River, a tributary to the Gadalfeo River, the village enjoys the typical characteristics of a mountain village: unique style architecture perfectly adapted to the rugged terrain and the local climate, yet maintain a reminder of its Moorish past. Without a doubt, Lanjaron is a place that needs to be visited, not forgetting the advantages offered by the Spa.
The archaelogical remains found within the inhabited area enhanced by the castle ruins are witness to the importance of the locality during the arab/andalusian period. Lanjaron is documented in history during the Alhamares dynasty, in the first half of the XIII century. It was conquered by Fernando el Catolico in 1490. According to legend, when the defenses to the castle were about to collapse, the Moore captain defending the main square threw himself from one of the towers rather than surrender.
The inhabitants gained their name as "cañoneros" for their contribution during the war of Independence against the French, apparently they made significantly efficient use of an ancient "mortar" against Napoleon's troops.
