The WXPG food review: Kempinski's breakfast room

Kempinski Hotel, Estepona - Opening Hours: Breakfast

by Edwin Gladstone

The food reviews are not advertisements. We visit a different restaurant every month, we pay for the meal and we comment and give points as honestly as we can for the benefit of our readers.

We have always assumed that we should usually visit and try a restaurant for an evening meal and sometimes for lunch; but what about breakfast? There are two very good occasions when one wants to have a good breakfast; one is for that American style breakfast meting and the other is just because one feels like a sumptuous breakfast anyway. We decided to re-visit the Kempinski hotel and see if their breakfast was as good as ever. The breakfast room is located down the stairs from the reception.

The staff
As you arrive at the breakfast room, you are welcomed by a very polite manageress at the desk, who will ask if you have a room number. No need to worry, you are just as welcome if you are not a hotel guest and you will be shown to a table. The breakfast is self service but it is not long before the waiter comes over to serve your favourite hot drink, coffee or tea.

Atmosphere
As usual, it was a gorgeous day and at 9.30 in the morning, we chose to sit on the terrace with an excellent view of the swimming pool below and the Med further out. I dare say that it is probably also quite pleasant to sit inside, should the weather not be as attractive..

The menu
There is no menu but if you can think of any breakfast food, you will find it on display for you to help yourself. You can start with any of a number of fruit juices, nicely chilled on ice, move on to a selection of cereals, then smoked salmon, prawns, cheeses, a selection of cold meats and, if you still feel like it after all that, your traditional English breakfast with eggs cooked in the way you like, scrambled, poached, fried, etc.
There is a very nice selection of different fresh rolls and bread, which is very difficult to resist.

Fruit juices and fresh fruit
I think that you will undoubtedly appreciate the freshness of the fruit as well as the display. FBA – None of us could resist a glass of cool fresh fruit juice; I particularly liked the mixed fruit juice and a plate of melon, water melon, papaya and strawberries. Went down very well!
Team score – 10/10

Cereals
There was a fair selection of cereal available. FBA – Quite frankly we all skipped that, not because it was not an attraction, but because we silently knew that we had to have some room left for some of the items we had already eyed up on the other counters.
Team score – 7/10

Fish
The smoked salmon and the prawns looked very attractive. To be honest there was not as much of a selection as I have seen before, may be it was not the right day for this. FBA – We all tried the smoked salmon, which was rather nice, thickly sliced with an outer coat of pepper.
Team score – 8/10

Cold meats and cheeses buffet
Rather an attractive proposition. Jamon Serrano, ham, different salamis, mortadella and various other sliced meats as well as a fair variety of cheeses. FBA – We all went for the selection we preferred and some soft goat cheese, which we thought tasted rather nice.
Team Score – 9/10

Cooked breakfast.
The cooked breakfast presented a wide variety of different hot dishes. Sausages of different types, bacon, beans… FBA – Once you have made your selection, you can then decide if you like your eggs fried, scrambled, soft boiled, poached… and while the cook is preparing them for you, you can toast some bread. Now that is what I call a good, full English breakfast!
Team Score – 10/10

SUMMARY
We went there on a Sunday morning and we found that it was a very nice way to have a family breakfast in a pleasant surrounding. It seemed to be quite popular and I am not surprised, as it was excellent value for money at €23 per person (1/2 price for children).
I think that it may also be well worth considering having that business meeting over breakfast rather than lunch or dinner, not because it is cheaper but because it is best to deal with business and get it out of the way in style early in the morning, leaving the rest of the day available for more directly productive tasks.  Thoroughly recommended.
