I sent several e-mails but not one got through. Did the Internet stop working? Or is it the case that the addresses I was sending to did not work?

Just because you sent some e-mails, and they did not go through, it does not mean that the addresses were incorrect. There is a number of things that can go wrong when you send an e-mail. The most common answer is that a server with which your network is communicating with, is down. Servers are what websites are hosted on and are reliable most of the time, but things do go wrong and once a week  a server may stop for an hour or two. If you send an e-mail to someone when his or her particular server is down, then the e- mail will not get through. Try again later, when the problem may be sorted
If  I can’t find a site on a search engine, does it mean it is not on the Internet.

If you are connected to the Internet by a telephone line, then all you need to get to sites all around the world is an interior browser, which is supplied with every PC that comes with Windows. It is a common misconception that you must go through a search engine in order to find a specific website and that if it’s not there it is not on the Net.  This is not the case, all you need to do is to type in the address you are looking for in the address bar and return. If you are unsure of the name and still cannot find it on the search engines, it is possible that they have not submitted it to the various search engines.
